Kitchen Safety – Electric Shocks
Appliances, whether large or small, make the kitchen one of the most used rooms in a house, and while the kitchen is probably the busiest room in your house, it also has the potential to be the most dangerous.
Look after and use appliances properly as they can cause accidents – most commonly electric shocks. Always observe all manufacturer warnings and check your appliances periodically for any wear and tear, and clean them regularly. Sticking metal objects into appliances can cause electrical shock. If you have an appliance that needs repair, always seek the advice of a trained technician. Attempting to fix appliances yourself increases your chance of an electric shock.
Small appliances such as microwaves, food processors, blenders, toasters, toaster ovens and coffee pots should have short cords that are plugged directly into an outlet rather than connecting them to an extension cord. If they must be used, remember, extension cords that are overloaded can result in fires or shock.
Wires and cords should be checked regularly for damage or fraying. A frayed cord can expose electrical wires, increasing chances of a shock when touched. Replace frayed wire or cord immediately; do not attempt to patch it with tape. Excess cord should be tied up using a spool or twist tie to prevent damage and always turn appliances off before unplugging them to reduce the risk of a shock.
Additionally, make it a habit of unplugging small kitchen appliances after each use. Not only is it safer, but it also saves electricity. Almost 40 percent of electricity is still being used even after appliances are turned off, unless they are unplugged.
