The Kitchen God’s Life

Can any room claim to be the warmest in the house? Living rooms have once again become formal, pristine, empty spaces, like the parlors reserved in the 1900s for “company.” Bedrooms — well, look at the divorce rates, still high no matter how you run the numbers. Dining rooms? They’re dwindling in square footage — who sets a proper table these days and then washes and irons the linen? Dens? They’ve become media rooms where Mom, Dad and kiddos No. 1 and No. 2 plug into their iPods, Xboxes, Macs and movies in companionably self-absorbed isolation. Libraries? See Dens, above. What other rooms have lost in area and panache, however, the kitchen has gained.
